Met Zonder Ballen
A frank and humorous film about a trans son and his mother, and the search for gender and identity. Based on the successful stage play of the same name.
What impact does ‘becoming who you are’ have on a family? MET ZONDER BALLEN paints a moving and hilariously honest picture of a child who knows increasingly well what he wants and a mother in confusion. She can barely keep up with his pace. The film shows all the misunderstandings, worries and clichés that come with the reality of a child in transition. At the same time, the film also deals with the universal themes of growing up, and the art of parenting and letting go.
The stage play with the same name, performed by Het Laagland theatre company, received such a strong response that it was decided to make a film version, so that the story could be shared with an even wider audience. Lead actor Flip Zonne Zuijderland emphasises that the film is relevant to all young people and their educators. ‘It’s about finding out what suits you best, and about daring and being allowed to go your own way.’ Maastricht-born theatre-maker and director Luca Meisters (alumnus of the Maastricht Institute of Performative Arts) signed on to direct the film adaptation.
