Het Smelt
In Belgian actress Veerle Baetens’ gripping directorial debut, Eva returns to her native village to reckon with her past. Based on Lize Spit’s bestseller of the same name.
HET SMELT is an explosive, close-to-the-bone exploration of the toxic confusion and cruelty of adolescence, and an unflinching portrait of the lasting impact of untreated trauma. The film toggles back and forth between adult Eva in the present day and during one scorching summer years ago – the summer in which the vulnerable thirteen-year-old Eva agreed to play a riddle game with her friends that got out of control. The film compels us to witness how the affection-starved, vulnerable young Eva was moulded into her brittle, isolated adult self. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, where Rosa Marchant was awarded a Special Jury Award for her performance.
