This Is Not A Film + Introduction
A day in the life of Jafar Panahi, clandestinely filmed during his house arrest. Dedicated to all Iranian filmmakers whose work is made impossible by the regime.
Panahi has been waiting months for the outcome of appeals filed by him against a prison sentence and professional ban. He discusses his ideas for a new film with a filmmaker friend. With a carpet, tape, chair, and pillow, Panahi sketches the events. He turns out to be a master storyteller: the story comes to life.
Thanks to a usb stick smuggled out of the country in a cake, THIS IS NOT A FILM had its premiere at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. This testimony of a filmmaker and his attempt to circumvent the censorship imposed on him is an exciting but extremely risky exercise. In July 2022, Panahi – during a trial of fellow filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof – was detained to serve his six-year prison sentence upheld on appeal. Last Friday (Feb. 3), Panahi was released after three months in exile following a brief hunger strike.
Please note: The lecture by Beri Shalmashi is cancelled, unfortunately. In her place, programmer Wouter Greven will shortly introduce the film.
