Bengali landlord Huzur Biswambhar Roy lives on the banks of a river, in a palace in a state of disrepair. It is the late 1920s and the era of landlords is coming to an end. For years, Roy has had little to do. The greatest source of pleasure in his life was his music room. In this room he organised grand, expensive concerts to show off his wealth. However, little remains of the family fortune and Roy has to watch with dismay as his neighbour Mahim, a vulgar money lender from a low caste, threatens to overtake him on the social ladder. When Mahim announces that he is going to organise a concert himself, we watch a confrontation between old money and new wealth unfold.

THE MUSIC ROOM is a highlight in the oeuvre of the Indian master Satyajit Ray. Poignant psychological drama is interspersed with compelling music and dance scenes, featuring popular Indian artists of the time, such as Begum Akhtar, Roshan Kumari, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Waheed Khan and Salamat Ali Khan.

Satyajit Ray, India, 1958, 100 min. Bengali spoken, English subtitles. With Chhabi Biswas, Sardar Akhtar, Gangapada Basu, Bismillah Khan, Salamat Ali Khan.
