Sofia finds herself breaking the law by giving birth to a baby out of wedlock. The hospital gives her 24 hours to provide them with the identification papers belonging to the father of the child before informing the authorities. Sofia’s middle-class parents, desperate to keep up appearances, force her to marry Omar, who hails from a working-class family – and whom the soon-to-be-mother barely knows. Sofia’s only support in her crisis is Lena, her cousin, a medical school student.
SOFIA is an incisive study of contemporary Moroccan society that keenly observes the place afforded to women and the mechanisms through which class and status are negotiated and upheld.
