Lumière Jazz Nights: Van Ruller // Hogenhuis
Jesse van Ruller and Maarten Hogenhuis present their second album Follow the Sound, featuring eight joint compositions centred around melody, sound, and improvisation.
Jesse van Ruller and Maarten Hogenhuis recorded their second album Follow the Sound in the first half of this year. Unlike their earlier work (Spirits High, 2021), almost all of the pieces on this album were co-written, resulting in eight organic compositions where melody and sound form the core.
The duo drew inspiration from sounds from around the world: flutes, the backs of suitcases, obscure guitars, an impressive collection of effects, and a small but distinctive guitar amplifier. Their influences range widely, from Blake Mills to Sam Gendel, and from Sufjan Stevens to Shabaka.
