VALERIE, BACK TO BLACK, REHAB – who doesn’t know the hits? Behind the hits, however, lies a troubled life, which is explored in this biopic. Both the musical highs and personal demons pass by: excessive fame, drug addictions and her widely reported relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil. But the good times are also covered in BACK TO BLACK, such as Amy’s early years in a bustling London, before global fame would cast a shadow over her life.

BACK TO BLACK, made with the collaboration of Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse and written by Matt Greenhalgh who also wrote Anton Corbijn’s CONTROL, naturally recalls the 2015 documentary AMY. Where the documentary revealed many painful issues, including the fact that Mitch probably exploited Amy, this biopic is milder in tone and is above all else an ode to Winehouse’s genius.

Sam Taylor-Johnson, UK, France, USA, 2024, 122 min. English spoken, Dutch subtitles. With Marisa Abela, Eddie Marsan, Jack O'Connell, Lesley Manville, Juliet Cowan.
