10 Songs for Charity
Modern musical fairy-tale about two Nigerian sisters ending up in illegal prostitution in Belgium.
A human trafficker takes Charity, along with her younger sister Happy, to Brussels. Once arrived, he tells them that to pay him back the sisters must earn money in illegal prostitution. Charity agrees, as she only wants to get rich as quickly as possible, but Happy does not. She has never even slept with anyone. While Charity manages to work her way up to assistant of the brothel owner, Happy is having more and more problems with her new life.
This tough story is told through ten musical songs, sung by the actresses themselves. This lightens the tone of the film. One could interpret the songs as a modern variation on the enlightening songs sung by Afro-American slaves. In a way, Happy and Charity are in an equally hopeless situation, exploited and mistreated. Music is their only means of comfort and empowerment.
