Santosh
Clever debut about an Indian woman who inherits her husband’s job as a police officer after his death. Through a murder case, she stumbles upon the unshakable hierarchy of modern India.
After the death of her husband, Hindu widow Santosh according to tradition inherits his job as a policeman in rural northern India. When a girl from a lower caste is murdered, charismatic detective Sharma involves her in the case. Under the wing of her new boss, Santosh goes all out to uncover the truth of the case. But the deeper she dives into the investigation, the more she gets caught in a web of corruption, misogyny and casteism.
SANTOSH is a riveting police thriller about a housewife who unexpectedly gets a job within a traditionally male-dominated environment. Skillfully, director Sandhya Suri interweaves Santosh's search for her new place in the world with themes of patriarchal power, prejudice, tradition and grief. SANTOSH premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival after which the film received international acclaim for its strong acting and visually stunning visuals.
