mamma roma
Classic by Pier Paolo Pasolini with Anna Magnani as an ex-prostitute who has never told her son about her past. When her former pimp shows up, her secret is endangered.
Like most parents, Mamma Roma wants her son to have a better life than she did. The prostitute therefore decides to quit her profession and drastically change her life. She buys a vegetable stall, picks up her son from the countryside and is determined to provide him with a good future. For this to happen, her past will have to remain a complete secret. Her dream of a respectable life, however, is soon shattered. Her son is led astray by his misguided friends and starts a relationship with ‘the neighbourhood slut’. To make things even worse, Mamma Roma’s former pimp Carmine also turns up.
Pasolini’s second feature closely follows the style of Italian neorealist cinema (such as Rossellini’s ROMA, CITTÀ APERTA). The magisterial Anna Magnani is the centre of this story about happiness and fate. Lumière shows the digitally restored version of the film.
