Lingui, The Sacred Bonds
Humanist drama by renowned African filmmaker Mahamat-Saleh Haroun about a single mother’s struggle to protect her pregnant daughter.
On the outskirts of N’Djamena in Chad, Amina lives alone with her only 15-year-old daughter Maria. Her already fragile world collapses the day she discovers that her daughter is pregnant. The teenager does not want this pregnancy. In a country where abortion is not only condemned by religion, but also forbidden by law, Amina finds herself facing a battle that seems lost in advance.
In this film for which Haroun returned to his native Chad, the women are strong and resilient, fighting for their freedom and equality in a patriarchal environment. Sisterhood portrayed beautifully and powerfully in vivid colours in the middle of a sandy Sahel.
