Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale
The beloved Crawley family returns to the big screen. In The Grand Finale, we follow the events unfolding at the Downton Abbey estate during the 1930s, set against a backdrop of social change and personal drama.
Building on his script for Robert Altman’s Gosford Park, writer Julian Fellowes created the typically British TV series Downton Abbey, centred on an aristocratic family and their servants on an estate at the beginning of the twentieth century. Strictly speaking, it’s a soap, but one with a superb ensemble cast, sharp dialogue, and the splendour of old British country houses. The series (2010-2015) became a massive hit and was followed by the feature films Downton Abbey (2019) and Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022). But as the proverb goes, all good things must come to an end – and so too must Downton Abbey. In The Grand Finale, we follow the Crawleys for one last time. Mary becomes the centre of a public scandal due to her divorce, and with the family also facing financial troubles, the future of Downton Abbey is suddenly uncertain. In order to preserve Downton Abbey, the Crawleys will have to embrace change.
