Can trauma live on in the walls of a house? Does it remain there, ingrained like a scar, even when its inhabitants are no longer there? Even as a child, Nora (Renate Reinsve) wondered what would become of all the pain and sadness that took place in her family home in Oslo, where she lived with her sister, father and mother. This was reinforced when her father Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård) moved to Sweden after the inevitable divorce. Now they meet again in the house in Norway after the death of Nora's mother.

Nora is now an acclaimed theatre actress but struggles with anxiety and panic attacks. Gustav is a celebrated film director and writer, but has had less success in recent years. Gustav has come to the family home in Oslo with a new autobiographical script about his own childhood. He wants Nora to play the lead role. Nora refuses.

In Sentimental Value, the family dynamics between Nora, her sister Agnes and father Gustav are masterfully portrayed by Reinsve, Lilleaas and Skarsgård. The film received a 19-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, placing it in the top 3 longest applauses ever at Cannes. (rs)

Sentimental Value won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. Stellan Skarsgård also won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film.
