Mother Mary
A psychosexual drama by David Lowery (The Green Knight, A Ghost Story) about the complex relationship between a pop diva and her fashion designer. Featuring a soundtrack by Charli XCX, FKA Twigs, Jack Antonoff, and others.
Pop star Mother Mary – think a cross between Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Madonna – is on the brink of her big comeback. Three days before she is due to perform her new single Spooky Action – a song referencing a principle of physics from Einstein and, in her own words, the greatest song in pop history – she arrives at the country house of fashion designer Sam. She begs for an outfit that truly suits her. Sam, however, feels betrayed by her old friend (and former lover?). The embittered Sam complains that she has never received recognition for her contribution to Mother Mary’s fame and image, even comparing her to a tumour. Yet she sets to work. Mother Mary gives her free rein, on one condition: there must be absolutely no red in the new outfit.
Inspired by the almost religious worship of pop stars, American director David Lowery explores themes of fame, identity and the creative process. And as in most of his work, atmosphere takes precedence over plot. Film buffs will also recognise nods to films by Peter Greenaway and Ingmar Bergman. (mv)
