Ciske (Danny de Munk) is seen as an unruly kid who only does mischief. His father is a sailor and is rarely at home, his mother wants nothing to do with him. Ciske has his heart in the right place and still tries to make something of his life in 1930s Amsterdam. Teacher Bruis wins Ciske’s trust and for a while it seems as if he has landed on the right path. Until Ciske’s mother tears up his favourite book and Ciske stabs her in a fit of rage.

The film adaptation of Piet Bakker’s book of the same name attracted more than two million moviegoers at the time and marked Danny de Munk’s breakthrough, thanks in part to the heartbreaking evergreen ‘Ik voel me zo verdomd alleen’. The other roles are played by the best-known Dutch actors of the time, including Willeke van Ammelrooy, Peter Faber, Rijk de Gooyer, Willem Nijholt, Herman van Veen and Linda van Dyck. (source: EYE)
