Amrum examines the collapse of fascism through the eyes of a boy caught between innocence and ideology. At just twelve years old, Nanning dons the uniform of the Hitler Youth while caring for his fragile, pregnant mother Hille and younger brother in their seaside home. Radio broadcasts announce Hitler’s downfall, yet in Nanning’s world, survival eclipses politics. When his grief-stricken mother insists she will only eat white bread, butter, and honey – luxuries impossible to obtain in a starving nation – Nanning embarks on a quietly epic journey across the island. From bartering with wary villagers to braving the treacherous mudflats at low tide, each step of his quest becomes a meditation on love, sacrifice, and the slow awakening of conscience.

Acclaimed Turkish-German filmmaker Fatih Akin directs with piercing restraint, stripping the story to its elemental truths. Rather than seeking sympathy for a child marked by Nazi indoctrination, the film reveals the humanity that survives beneath imposed hatred – reminding us that children absorb the world around them.
