When filmmaker Vladlena Sandu returns to her childhood in Chechnya, she reconstructs memories of a life abruptly shattered by the First Chechen War. What begins as a deeply personal act of remembrance gradually unfolds into a dreamlike journey through memory, fantasy and fear. Toy theatres, surreal tableaux, archival footage and autobiographical narration intertwine as Sandu searches for a cinematic language capable of expressing experiences that defy words.
Blending intimate autobiography with striking visual invention, Sandu reflects on the enduring impact of war on children and the cycles of violence that echo across generations. Echoes of Andrei Tarkovsky and Sergei Parajanov resonate in the film’s poetic imagery, while Europop anthems and the recurring presence of King Kong, her imaginary childhood protector, offer unexpected moments of tenderness and hope.
