The Faraway, Nearby + Panel discussion
After the screening of The Faraway, Nearby – a documentary on the tragic life story of Joseph Weber, the unsung founder of gravitational wave research – there will be a panel discussion. This is a collaboration with Maastricht Young Academy.
MYA is a group of early-career researchers who have come together with the aim of providing an independent – and if necessary, critical – platform within Maastricht University. At Lumière, we enjoy collaborating with MYA to explore and discuss various (current) topics through film. With the purchase of a ticket, you will receive a drink token.
The panelists will be announced at a later stage.
The Faraway, Nearby
Documentary on the tragic life story of Joseph Weber, the unsung founder of gravitational wave research. Until his death, he remained a pariah in his field of research; rehabilitation only came 16 years later.
Joseph Weber was the first scientist to explore the detection of gravitational waves. Derided by the science community, Weber worked nearly alone to answer one of the great questions of science: can we ‘hear’ the universe through gravitational waves, much like we ‘see’ the universe through electromagnetic waves? This was a quest that consumed him up to his death.
The Faraway, Nearby includes interviews with Nobel Laureates Kip Thorne and Ray Weiss, psychologist Steven Pinker, astrophysicist Nergis Mavalvala, Janna Levin and others.
