Nickel Boys
Film adaptation of Colson Whitehead's novel, where two African-American boys strive to survive a merciless reform school riddled with systemic racism, abuse, and violence. Nominated for two Oscars, including Best Picture.
This gripping adaptation of Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is a poignant coming-of-age story set in the segregated Florida of the 1960s. Elwood is an idealistic young Black high school student whose dream of attending university is shattered when he is falsely convicted by racist officials and sent to the notorious Nickel Academy. There, he befriends Turner. Together, they struggle to endure the abuse inflicted by the school and its corrupt administration.
Director RaMell Ross seamlessly navigates between decades—the story spanning from the 1960s to 2010. By weaving together memories, traumas, friendships, archival footage, and moments of defiance, Ross's film offers a powerful and radical perspective on the perils faced by African-American boys.
