The Librarians: Who Decides What We Read?

Who gets to decide which stories are told — and which are not? The Librarians is a powerful documentary about censorship, free access to information, and the wider social debate surrounding stories, books and ideas. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion.

The Librarians: Who Decides What We Read?

The Librarians follows librarians in the United States who are facing growing pressure to remove books on racism, gender and LGBTQIA+ themes from school libraries. What begins as a debate about books soon reveals itself as part of a broader political and cultural struggle. Together with Maastricht University Library and MYA, Lumière presents this timely documentary, followed by an English-language panel discussion on censorship, democracy and free access to information.

Following the screening, an English-language panel discussion moderated by Katleen Gabriels will bring together Egid van Houtem, Tom Herrenberg, Wim Hupperetz and Mariëlle Wijermars. Together, they will explore questions around censorship, democracy, access to information, and the extent to which these developments are also being felt across Europe.
