The ’00s: Volver
Secrets. Ghosts. A troublesome dead body. These elements form the basis of Volver, a magical and lush melodrama for which Pedro Almodóvar returned to his home region of La Mancha.
Raimunda and her sister Sole grew up in La Mancha, a conservative rural community, but moved to Madrid years ago to build new lives. Yet ghosts from the past continue to haunt them. Sometimes quite literally, as their deceased mother Irene roams the superstitious La Mancha countryside and seems determined to settle some unfinished business. The discovery of a corpse in a freezer only adds to the unrest.
In Volver, Almodóvar characteristically weaves comedy and drama into a film about remembering, letting go, and starting anew – themes that also resonate with fifty years of Lumière: looking back at what has been without losing sight of the future. At the Cannes Film Festival, the film’s female cast was collectively awarded the Best Actress prize.
