Five-year-old Sôsuke lives with his parents on a steep cliff above the sea. One day, he sees a goldfish with a girl’s face in the water. The fish, which he names Ponyo, has escaped from her father, a moody wizard who was once human but turned his back on humanity. Ponyo dreams of becoming human. Thanks to her strong magical will, she begins to change, but her father wants to bring her back to the underwater world. Ponyo enlists Sôsuke’s help to stay in the human world.
The sweet and imaginative Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea is one of the gentlest and most child-oriented films in Miyazaki’s oeuvre. The film is an oasis of calm compared to the ultra-fast editing of most animated films.
