Mama’ku – Van Jakarta tot de Molukken
A documentary by Sven Peetoom (Tussen Wal En Schip – Geruisloos Indisch) about dancer Cheroney Pelupessy, who travels to Indonesia for the first time with her mother. A film about migration, domestic violence and intergenerational trauma.

Sven Peetoom has been documenting the consequences of the suppression of Dutch colonial history in Indonesia for many years. In this documentary, he follows dancer Cheroney Pelupessy as she returns to Jakarta with her mother. The place where Cheroney’s mother grew up, but about which she always remained tight-lipped. During the journey, they try to grow closer to one another.
Prior to Mama’ku, the short film Sudah (Aldo Agaatsz, Netherlands, 2025, 17 min.) will be screened, in which Senna, from Manado, sets out to discover her roots in Indonesia.
Thursday 11 June: Post-screening discussion with Sven Peetoom
Mama’ku: van Jakarta Tot De Molukken explores how the history of migration continues to shape families across generations. Following the screening, director Sven Peetoom will join moderator Bran Martens for a discussion on the themes explored in the film and their wider social and historical context.
