Les Parapluies De Cherbourg

Young Geneviève helps her mother in an umbrella shop in Cherbourg and is head over heels in love with car mechanic Guy. Nothing seems to stand in the way of their happiness, until Guy is called up for military service in Algeria. During his absence, circumstances force Geneviève to make a life-changing decision. When Guy returns, it becomes clear that time has irrevocably taken its toll.

With Les Parapluies De Cherbourg, Jacques Demy made film history. Every line of dialogue is sung to the music of Michel Legrand, creating a sung-through musical that remains, at the same time, a moving and realistic love story. Catherine Deneuve made her international breakthrough with her leading role, and the film won the Palme d’Or at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival. It also received five Oscar nominations. The stunning 4K restoration allows Demy’s explosion of colour and music to shine once again in all its glory.
