On the evening that Elle Woods is taken to a restaurant by her boyfriend Warner Huntington III, she expects him to propose. But instead, he breaks up with her. Warner has ambitions to become a successful senator and believes that Elle is ‘not serious enough’ for a life by his side. Elle plans to win him back by studying law at Harvard Law School, where Warner has also been accepted. When Elle becomes involved in a high-profile case involving a fitness instructor suspected of murder, she gets the chance to prove herself as a lawyer.
Legally Blonde is based on the novel by Amanda Brown, who herself studied at Stanford Law School and, due to her interest in fashion and appearance, had to contend with a great deal of prejudice from her fellow students and lecturers. The film became a huge hit. Its success led to a sequel and a musical adaptation.
