La Baie Des Anges

During a visit to a casino, Jean, a young bank clerk, discovers the alluring world of roulette. At the roulette table, he meets Jackie, a glamorous woman who lives entirely for the game and whose life is dictated by luck, loss and the hope of the next big win. Together, they travel the length of the Côte d’Azur’s casinos, where love and gambling addiction become increasingly intertwined.

Set against the backdrop of the magnificent city of Nice, Jacques Demy explores themes such as chance, obsession and desire – themes that would continue to characterise his entire body of work. Jeanne Moreau shines in one of her most memorable roles, whilst Michel Legrand’s subtle, jazzy score lends the film an irresistible melancholy.
