Jimpa
A sensitive, semi-autobiographical drama by Sophie Hyde (Good Luck To You, Leo Grande) exploring queer identity, parenthood and the complex relationships between three generations. Starring Olivia Colman and John Lithgow.

Hannah, her husband and their non-binary daughter Frances fly from Australia to Amsterdam to visit Jimpa – a combination of grandpa and his own name, Jim – who, after a stroke, seems to have made a miraculous recovery.
Frances reveals she would like to stay in Amsterdam with her grandfather. Hannah also has another reason for visiting her father. She is working on an autobiographical film about her relationship with her father and his life story. It is no ordinary story: he once chose Amsterdam over a life in Australia with his wife and two children. A place where he could openly be himself, as a gay man, activist and politically engaged professor.
Director Sophie Hyde has adapted a story that is close to her own life. A whirlwind of emotions makes Jimpa a sensitive and honest film about the complexity of (family) relationships, queer identity, and the struggle for acceptance and recognition of sexual diversity and rights. A warm film, not least thanks to the authentic performances of Olivia Colman, John Lithgow and Aud Mason-Hyde, the director’s own daughter.
