Ida
A moving and intimate drama, captured in stunning black-and-white imagery, about the young novice Anna. Before she takes her vows, she must first visit her only relative, her mother’s sister.

Aunt Wanda, a communist, alcoholic and ruthless judge, comes forward with an unexpected revelation. It turns out that Anna is Jewish and her real name is Ida. As an orphan, she ended up in the convent, where she was raised by the nuns and thus shielded from the Nazi regime. Together with Wanda, Anna sets out across the desolate Poland of the 1960s in search of her family’s roots and fate. The unplanned quest raises many questions for the girl about faith, trust and her true identity, while love and freedom beckon in the form of an attractive musician. Wanda, for her part, is confronted with the difficult choices she has made in her life.
Ida is being screened again in the run-up to the Dutch premiere (19 November) of Fatherland, the new film by Pawel Pawlikowski.
