An autobiographical drama in which, through the eyes of a young girl, we see how a family from Yugoslavia tries to build a new life in Denmark.
In the hope of creating a better life, six-year-old Maja and her parents leave Yugoslavia for Denmark, leaving behind Maja’s two older brothers with the promise they will join once the family is settled. But the new country proves difficult and unfamiliar, and the family struggles to adapt to a new language, culture, and way of life. As the years pass, Maja grows up and becomes a successful artist in Denmark. Yet, beneath her achievements, she carries a divide of joy, sorrow, and gratitude – torn between the life she has built and the painful sacrifices her parents made for their future.
Actress-turned-director Marijana Janković was the same age as Maja when her own family left Ivangrad (today Berane) for Northern Europe. The details of her story may be specific, but the larger flow of things has remained the same for emigrants across generations and countries of origin.
