Eva is trapped in an unhappy marriage to an older, emotionally distant husband. When she meets the young engineer Adam, a passionate affair awakens desires that force her to choose between social convention and personal freedom.
Gustav Machatý tells the story with striking visual poetry, relying more on images than dialogue, giving Ecstasy a timeless quality. Upon its release, the film caused an international scandal with its unprecedented nude scenes and its subtle yet groundbreaking depiction of female sexuality. It also marked the international breakthrough of Hedy Lamarr, who would later become both a Hollywood star and an acclaimed inventor. More than ninety years later, Ecstasy remains a landmark of cinematic innovation and artistic courage.
