Amadeus
A visually lavish classic in which Mozart’s life story is told from the embittered perspective of his less talented contemporary, Antonio Salieri. Winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Salieri leads a comfortable life as a composer at the Viennese court. He regards his musical talent as a gift from God. Then he meets the child genius Wolfgang, whose work he experiences as truly divine. Salieri’s initial awe of Mozart gradually turns into all-consuming jealousy, and he does everything in his power to undermine Mozart’s career. At the same time, he realises that his own work pales in comparison. His fascination with Mozart remains. This inner conflict ultimately drives Salieri to madness.
The film opens in 1823, in the asylum where Salieri eventually ends up. There, he confesses to having murdered Mozart. Through flashbacks, Mozart’s life is explored up to his tragic death. The emotional depth and universal themes of jealousy, faith and talent in this cinematic masterpiece continue to both move and fascinate. (ms)
Lumière is screening a restored version of the original cinema release (the so-called theatrical cut).
