Akira
Brand-new 4K restoration of the influential anime masterpiece Akira, a timeless story about a secret military project that threatens Neo-Tokyo.

Tokyo, 2019. An enormous explosion has devastated the metropolis, and rival biker gangs rule the streets. Bikers Tetsuo and Kaneda hold their own in a battle against the Clowns gang. When Tetsuo develops a destructive power he cannot control, the military and a group of scientists intervene. They transform him into the ultimate weapon of destruction, one capable of bringing about the downfall of Neo-Tokyo.
Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1988 anime classic remains one of the most influential – and most violent – visions of the cyberpunk genre ever created. Entirely hand-drawn, Akira is especially renowned for its extraordinarily detailed backgrounds, the result of years of painstaking work. The outcome of this craftsmanship – now restored in stunning 4K – is a no-holds-barred visual spectacle and a gripping, still highly relevant story about the corrupting influence of absolute power.

Pre-film: Voice Messages From My Mom — Elinice Adeyemi
Before the Lumière Open Air screening of Akira, we present Elinice Adeyemi shortfilm Voice Messages From My Mom. Inspired by Chantal Akerman’s News From Home, this intimate short film follows a Nigerian student in The Netherlands as she receives a series of WhatsApp voice messages from her mother.
