Recording of podcast Café Europa + Screening Merkel
In the week in which the signing of the Maastricht Treaty (1992) is commemorated, Lumière, in collaboration with Studio Europa and Haagsch College, will be screening the documentary Merkel, a remarkable portrait of the enigmatic Chancellor. Prior to the screening, an episode of Café Europa - a bi-weekly podcast by Studio Europa and Haagsch College on European politics - will be recorded live in the screening room (language: Dutch).

Following an oppressive childhood behind the Berlin Wall, living in constant fear of the Stasi, Merkel embraced physics with great success. This gave her a unique palette of knowledge and experience, which proved invaluable after she exchanged science for politics. From 2005 she grew to become a resolute chancellor and an anchor for Europe. As a woman in a bastion of masculinity, she understood how to deal with alpha males in politics. Meanwhile, her opponents consistently underestimated her.
