Lumière x Bangladesh Embassy x UNU-MERIT: The Salt In Our Waters + Q&A

This event, a collaboration with the Bangladesh Embassy and UNU-MERIT, is organised to mark International Mother Earth Day. Bangladesh is regarded as a climate ground zero. The artisanal fishermen along the vast coast are caught on the frontline of this battle on a daily basis. Millions of families desperately need tools to adapt to grave changes - their natural habitats and ecosystems need immediate protection and restoration. THE SALT IN OUR WATERS is an unfiltered and inspired portrait of this resourceful and colourful community. After the screening there will be a Zoom Q&A with director Rezwan Shahriar Sumit and the ambassador of Bangladesh to The Netherlands, His Excellency Riaz Hamidullah, who will be there in person (language: English).

The Salt In Our Waters - English subtitled

When a sculptor visits a remote fishing village on the Bangladeshi Delta, he finds himself center stage in a primal conflict between land and sea, man and nature, past and future.

For his latest art installation, Rudro journeys to a remote mangrove isle on the Bangladeshi Delta, a day's boat ride and a world away from modern, crowded Dhaka. Welcomed by the local fishermen and their leader Chairman, Rudro's modern ideas and lifelike sculptures enchant the village boys and his landlord's daughter. But when the local Ilish catch proves elusive, the elders blame Rudro’s idolatry for the curse of empty nets. In this vanishing land where sea and sky merge, a storm is brewing and change – welcome or not — is coming.

Rezwan Shahriar Sumit, Bangladesh, France, 2020, 100 min. Bengali spoken, English subtitles.
