Feature film based on true events in which judge Bert Röling sits on the Tokyo Tribunal following WWII. The conviction of Japanese war criminals turns out to be more complex than envisioned.

In late 1945, Bert Röling, judge and professor of Indonesian Law, is invited to take a seat on the Tokyo Tribunal. It will administer justice to Japanese war criminals. In the long two and a half years away from home, Röling increasingly struggles with an inner conflict: should he remain loyal to the politically biased interests of his government, or to his conscience – as an independent judge?
