Stemmen van Naoorlogse Generaties
Through interviews, this enlightening documentary gives a voice to the second and third generation of people in the Netherlands with an Indonesian or Moluccan background.
For their film, Simone Berger and Armando Ello went in search of the transmission of (war) trauma from the first to the second and third generation of Dutch people with an Indian or Moluccan background. Various aspects of the carry-over from Indian and colonial influences, two wars and migration are addressed. Writers such as Reggie Baay, Marion Bloem, Adriaan van Dis, Dido Michielsen and Sylvia Pessireron discuss their family histories, which they incorporated into their work. Four others from the third generation – Robin Block, Cheroney Pelupessy, Inez Schelfhout and Esmay Usmany – use their family history in other artistic or professional ways. All together, they are reshaping their legacies and the future of war remembrance.
STEMMEN VAN NAOORLOGSE GENERATIONS shows in a visual way how the past can have an impact on people with ‘roots’ in the former Dutch East Indies. The interviews are complemented by 2D animations, imaginative clips and interviews with trauma specialists.
