My Favourite Cake
A heartwarming tale about a lonely elderly Iranian widow searching for new love, hoping to bake her favourite cake for a special someone in her apartment. Winner of the International Film Critics' Award at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival.
Seventy-year-old Mahin lives in a suburb of Tehran and is determined to inject some new energy into her life. Apart from tending to her lush garden and having lunch dates with her equally retired friends, her days have lost their spark.
Her journey toward rediscovering life's pleasures begins with small, cautious steps, but with each one, her confidence grows. She throws caution to the wind when one day she tells Faramarz, a local taxi driver, that she’d like to get to know him better. She invites him to her home, but her attempts to avoid the prying eyes of her nosy neighbours are unsuccessful.
The Iranian government banned the directors of MY FAVOURITE CAKE from attending their film’s premiere in Berlin. Due to scenes depicting dancing, alcohol consumption, and criticism of the morality police, the film has been prohibited from screening in Iran. However, it is expected to be a hit with arthouse audiences worldwide. (rs)
