When Kun gets to know his newborn sister Mirai (meaning ‘future’ in Japanese), he is at first very happy with her presence. His parents’ attention, however, increasingly goes to Mirai, and Kun quickly feels lost and excluded. He is furious. A magical time travel port in his backyard turns out to be an escape route. Kun travels through time and meets several family members, including Mirai, now a teenager. Together they embark on a magical journey that leads to great discoveries about their impressive family history.

Mamoru Hosoda (THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME, SUMMER WARS) is by now a household name in the world of Japanese anime. MIRAI premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Film. And rightly so: this film is a lush, magical and emotional adventure about the miracle we call family. (wg)
