Bertolucci saw the young and inexperienced Maria as the perfect choice for the lead role. Maria couldn’t believe her luck, as she had only played minor parts until then. But what began as a dream quickly turned into a nightmare when co-star Marlon Brando strictly followed Bertolucci's controversial direction, leading to the infamous "’butter scene."’ Despite widespread criticism, the film was a massive success. Maria, however, would never fully recover from the controversy surrounding her role.

Jessica Palud’s film is based on the biography written by Maria’s cousin, Vanessa Schneider. Anamaria Vartolomei delivers a powerful performance in the title role. MARIA offers a faithful portrayal of the excesses that shaped the world of 1970s cinema. (ms)
