Live film concert by Kevin Toma accompanying Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s timeless classic Sunrise
Live film concert by Kevin Toma accompanying Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s timeless classic Sunrise, one of the undisputed masterpieces of film history.
Murnau’s work has been a fixture on the lists of the greatest films of all time. After rising to fame with Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922) and Faust: A German Folk Legend (1926), the German filmmaker set his sights on Hollywood. Sunrise was his first American production and won four Oscars straight away. In this poignant love tragedy, a wicked woman from the big city turns the head of a simple farmer. Though happily married, he plunges headfirst into what is bound to be a doomed infatuation.
Murnau is regarded as one of the foremost directors of German Expressionism. His masterful use of light and shadow, alongside the many virtuosic camera movements, continues to impress nearly a century later. Yet at its core, the film endures because of its timeless story—one made all the more profoundly moving by Kevin’s live musical accompaniment.
Before this screening, David Deprez will give a short introduction as part of his farewell programme The Final Cut.
