Carpenter François is happily married to Thérèse and has two cute children. One day he falls in love with Émilie. He’s convinced that these two loves can be combined, that happiness works through additions. Reality, however, turns out differently.
The power of LE BONHEUR is undiminished after more than fifty years. Dreamy picnics in flowery landscapes – images borrowed from Varda’s hero Jean Renoir – give the impression of unlimited happiness, but there lies patriarchal toxicity beneath the surface. Varda herself called the film ‘A beautiful summer fruit with a worm in it,’. In any case, the grey area between sexual freedom and personal humiliation is just as relevant as in the early sixties, and Varda nothing less than a visionary.

Agnès Varda, France, 1965, 76 min. French spoken, English subtitles. With Jean-Claude Drouot, Marie-France Boyer, Marcelle Faure-Bertin, Manon Lanclos, Sylvia Saurel.
