Il Sol Dell’Avvenire
Bittersweet comedy by and starring Nanni Moretti (Habemus Papam) about a filmmaker who finds himself in a marital and financial crisis while shooting his new film.
Italian Moretti has been a fixture on the arthouse film circuit for over twenty years, and a much-loved director in his native country, where his latest film was once more a commercial success. In it, the almost-seventy-year-old Moretti, who plays the director Giovanni, looks back on his career and comments on, among other things, violence in films and the rise of streaming services. Giovanni directs a film about a Hungarian circus company, which fled Hungary after the Russian invasion in 1956. Meanwhile, his wife Paola works as a producer on a commercial Korean gangster film. She actually wants to divorce him but never finds a good time to do so.
IL SOL DELL’AVVENIRE is especially interesting for those who know Moretti’s work well. The film is also full of cinephilic references to, among others, Quentin Tarantino’s foot fetish and Federico Fellini’s films. (jc)
