In his splendid feature film debut, Lukas Dhont portrays the dreams and desires of a 15-year-old girl who wants nothing more than to become a ballerina.
To realize that dream, a lot of discipline is needed, but the challenge is made even greater because Lara was born in the body of a boy. Lara’s adolescent frustrations and impatience are heightened as she realizes her body does not bend so easily to the strict discipline of ballet class.
GIRL was one of the true discoveries of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. 16-year-old Victor Polster was awarded for his acting performance. In addition, the film won the Queer Palm and the prestigious Caméra d'Or (prize for best first feature).
