This early Hitchcock film shows the enormous talent of the later ‘master of suspense’. The film – with the subtitle A STORY OF THE LONDON FOG – is set in London. The city is terrorised by a Jack the Ripper-like serial killer known as The Avenger. Every Tuesday night the body of a new victim – invariably a young, blonde woman – is found.

Described by Hitchcock himself as ‘the first real Hitchcock film’, this is also the first film in which Hitchcock himself appears briefly. From this film onwards, almost every Hitchcock film has a small appearance (a so-called cameo) by the director himself.

Alfred Hitchcock, UK, 1927, 92 min. , without subtitles. With Ivor Novello, June Tripp, Marie Ault, Arthur Chesney, Malcolm Keen.
