Ferrari
Biopic by Michael Mann (Heat) about racing driver and car manufacturer Enzo Ferrari. The film focuses on the year 1957, when both Ferrari’s business and his marriage were in dire straits. With Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz.
Michael Mann based his new film on ENZO FERRARI – THE MAN AND THE MACHINE (1991), a bestseller by sports journalist Brock Yates about the life of Enzo Ferrari (1898-1988). In 1957, Ferrari is getting overpowered by Maserati, the company is threatened with bankruptcy and Enzo’s marriage to Laura suffers from the tragic loss of their late son Dino. To turn the tide, he decides to focus all his attention on one race: the Mille Miglia – thousand miles – across Italy.
As befits a film about Ferrari, this film contains a series of impressive, deafening racing scenes, set in an era when races had no regard whatsoever for the safety of drivers or the audience, who watched from behind straw bales. Just leave it to Michael Mann to portray those scenes with gusto and a sense of drama. (mv)
