Emmanuelle
French filmmaker Audrey Diwan – winner of the Golden Lion with the abortion drama Happening – explores sexual pleasure in the post-Me Too era with this new adaptation of Emmanuelle Arsan’s erotic novel.
Emmanuelle follows her husband to Asia, where he is holding a diplomatic post. Once on the ground, two women initiate her into lusts that were previously unknown to her.
This is one of the most eagerly awaited French films of 2024. Diwan ventures into a new film adaptation of one of the world’s greatest cult novels. Will she be able to match the success of the 1974 film adaptation that saw Sylvia Kristel break through as an actress? While Divan had originally assigned the lead role to Léa Seydoux, her final choice fell to Noémie Merlant, more suited in Diwan’s eyes to play the role of a strong, seductive woman. Diwan’s approach is to redefine eroticism. Which, she says, revolves around both what is revealed and what is concealed. (ms)
