Daaaaaalí!
Prolific filmmaker Quentin Dupieux (Deerskin) presents a playful, inventive and humorous ode to Salvador Dalí. The film follows a journalist who is eager to interview Dalí, but her attempts to do so are thwarted by the flamboyant artist.
Quentin Dupieux’s DAAAAAAAALÍ! is a light-hearted comedy from the surreal universe of Salvador Dalí, a surrealist painter who rendered absurd images in a realistic style; a crazy, eccentric man who stood out with his long, thin and curly moustache. A French journalist is given the honourable task of interviewing the iconic artist. However, little goes according to plan, and we are brought into a universe where interviews are attempted to be completed and dreams are attempted to be told. Gradually, a world inspired by Dalí’s surreal art and persona is revealed to us, with light-hearted references to David Lynch and Wes Anderson.
The film was written and directed by Quentin Dupieux, who assembled a cast of prominent French actors, with a handful of them portraying Dalí (the Master is too complex for just one man, according to Dupieux). Simple editing techniques and visual effects, combined with Thomas Bangalter’s score, make the film a distinctive blend of humour, surrealism, and intricate connections between dreams and realities.
