Cidade de Deus - English subtitled + Introduction & discussion

An unforgettable look into life in Rio de Janeiro’s most dangerous slums, told through the eyes of a boy born in the favelas who dreams of a career as a photographer and wants to leave the drug violence behind.

Time & Tickets

CIDADE DE DEUS follows the lives of two friends, Rocket and Little Zé. Rocket wants to escape life in the favelas and dreams of winning over Angélica. Meanwhile, his friend ends up in the drug trade and grows into a ruthless criminal. Tensions in the slums come to a boiling point during a fierce confrontation between two gangs.

CIDADE DE DEUS may be a film about poverty and violence, but Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund packaged those themes in a hyper-stylised, flashy and sharply edited film. The cast is mostly made up of residents of the favelas. The film has been ranked 25th in the list of best films of all time on IMDb for years.

Prior to the screening of CIDADE DE DEUS there will be an introduction by film students of United World College Maastricht. After the screening the students will discuss the film.
