Chaplin: Spirit of the Tramp
An intimate portrait of Charlie Chaplin’s life, made by his granddaughter. The documentary shows how Chaplin’s Romani origin inspired his iconic and beloved character The Tramp.
‘The life story of my grandfather, Charlie Chaplin, has been told many times, but I wanted to approach it from a personal angle,’ says his granddaughter Carmen Chaplin. In Chaplin, Spirit Of The Tramp, she shows the history of Chaplin’s family and his Roma origins. The documentary features interviews with Chaplin family members and contemporary Roma artists including filmmaker Tony Gatlif, jazz guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg, artist Lita Cabellut and flamenco dancer Farruquito. These interviews are alternated with scenes from Chaplin’s films and images from the family archive, offering new insight into Chaplin the man and the artist.
