Opening Night | Mulholland Drive

More info

Digitally restored version of Lynch classic Mulholland Drive. An erotic journey through Los Angeles, full of suspense and atmosphere, culminating in a bizarre finale where dream and reality begin to blur and characters change their identity, by the music of composer Angelo Badalamenti. Mulholland Drive was nominated for dozens of prizes, including a Golden Palm and an Oscar. Lynch received the Best Director Award in Cannes. Prior to the screening David Deprez (artistic director Lumière) gives a short introduction.

This film is part of the opening night. Dress code: Red Room.

Betty, a young, blonde woman from a rural area arrives in Hollywood, dreaming of a career as an actress. She meets a mysterious brunette who lost her memory in a car accident on Mulholland Drive. Their quest for the identity of the brunette becomes an erotic journey through Los Angeles, full of suspense and atmosphere, culminating in a bizarre finale where dream and reality begin to blur and characters change their identity, by the music of composer Angelo Badalamenti.

MULHOLLAND DRIVE was initially planned as a television series, but TV channel ABC’s management decided to pull the plug after seeing the pilot episode. Too bizarre, was their verdict. Thanks to French film producers, Lynch could still edit his material into a feature film that was awarded the prize for best director during the Festival de Cannes.

David Lynch, France, USA, 2001, 145 min. English & Spanish spoken, Dutch subtitles. With Naomi Watts, Laura Harring, Justin Theroux, Jeanne Bates, Dan Birnbaum.

Opening Night | The Elephant Man

More info

Digitally restored version of Lynch classic The Elephant Man. The tragic life story of John Merrick, a deformed man who was known in Victorian London as The Elephant Man and exploited as a fairground attraction. The film was nominated for eight Oscars, none of which were redeemed. However, the film won a César and BAFTAs, for best film and actor. Prior to the screening David Deprez (artistic director Lumière) gives a short introduction.

This film is part of the opening night. Dress code: Red Room.

The young surgeon Frederick Treves provides Merrick with shelter in a hospital and starts to examine him. Merrick seems unable to think or speak, but with great patience Treves manages to teach him a few words.
The second film by David Lynch is an oddity in his oeuvre: a conventional, linear story. The film features an outstanding performance by John Hurt in the greatest role of his career. Despite wearing prosthetics and makeup that rendered him unrecognizable, Hurt was nominated for an Academy Award. THE ELEPHANT MAN was nominated for eight Academy Awards, though it didn’t win any.

David Lynch, UK, USA, 1980, 124 min. English spoken, Dutch subtitles. With Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller.

Opening Night | Twin Peaks 2017 (season 3) Episode 1&2 (sold out)

More info

Exclusive cinema premiere of Twin Peaks 2017 (season 3) Episode 1&2. It is happening again! Prior to the screening, Stijn Huijts (artistic director Bonnefantenmuseum) and David Deprez (artistic director Lumière) will give a short introduction.

This screening is part of the opening night. Dress code: Red Room.

Fans of the show had been speculating about it for years, but in 2017 the iconic TV series TWIN PEAKS finally returned. Twenty-five years after the murder of Laura Palmer we return to the suburban town of Twin Peaks. Although the series rejects nostalgia, various members of the original cast return. Lucy still runs the reception of the local police station in her own, inimitable way. In the Double R Diner, Shelly and Norma serve ‘damn good coffee’. And of course Kyle MacLachlan returns as FBI agent Dale Cooper, still fond of cherry pie and black coffee.
In this third season of TWIN PEAKS, Cooper is seemingly stuck in the Black Lodge. He is told that he can only leave if his doppelganger comes back. Lumière Cinema shows the first two episodes of this new TWIN PEAKS season on the big screen.

David Lynch, USA, 2017, 120 min. English spoken, without subtitles. With Kyle MacLachlan, Sheryl Lee, Michael Horse, Chrysta Bell, Miguel Ferrer, David Lynch.
